Premier League: West Ham finisher Alisson blunders to end Liverpool’s unbeaten run

Jurgen Klopp was furious with officials after West Ham punished Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker for three mistakes and ended the Reds’ 25-match unbeaten run with a 3-2 win on Sunday. Klopp’s side would have broken the club’s unbeaten run record in all competitions, which had stood since 1982, had they avoided a defeat at the London Stadium. But Alisson’s disastrous performance drew the condemnation of Liverpool’s first defeat since losing to Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals in April. Liverpool have not lost in the league since Fulham won at Anfield in March.

It was a day to forget for Alisson, whose own goal gave West Ham a first-half lead.

Trent Alexander-Arnold equalized with a brilliant free-kick, but Alisson was at fault again after half-time as Pablo Fornals and Kurt Zouma.

Divock Origi got once again for Liverpool, but it was not enough to sustain his long unbeaten streak.

Klopp was furious with West Ham’s first goal, saying Alisson was fouled by Angelo Ogbona and that Craig Poson should have sent off Aaron Cresswell for a nasty foul on Jordan Henderson.

“The first he scored is a foul on the goalkeeper. The hand goes into Alisson’s arm so how can he catch it? It doesn’t make any sense,” Klopp said.

“What can Alison do? People will say I’m making excuses but I’m cool.

“You need normal judgment from a referee and he didn’t. There was a reckless challenge on Creswell Henderson. It was a clear red card.”

Liverpool fell to fourth place in the Premier League as West Ham climbed up to third.

The Reds are four points behind leader Chelsea, while West Ham are only three points behind Thomas Tuchel’s men.

“No matter how long the race is, it will be over. It looked like we had lost a little patience. We weren’t so calm in the crucial moments. We can be 100 percent better,” Klopp said.

West Ham’s first league win against Liverpool since 2016 was also their manager David Moyes’ first league success against Klopp in the eighth attempt.

Moyes has done an amazing job in his second spell at West Ham and it will be a challenge to earn a place in the Champions League if he maintains this level of performance.

“Liverpool has been hard to beat in my career, so I was very happy to have it. It was a very good effort,” Moyes said.

“I’m extremely proud. The way the players have gone about it, you’re talking about me, these players were close to relegation. Now we’re pushing Europe.”

In the fourth minute, Fornals’ inswing corner ran to Ogbona, who came off Alisson with a jump that obstructed the Brazilian’s approach.

Ogbona’s hand made contact with Alisson as the keeper’s attempt to punch clearly turned the ball behind him and into his net.

After a lengthy VAR check, Liverpool players surrounded Poisson to claim both a foul on Alisson and a handball by Ogbona, but the goal was allowed to stand.

In the 41st minute, Alexander-Arnold leveled Liverpool in brilliant style.

Mohamed Salah’s sharp legs pulled a foul from Declan Rice on the edge of the field and Alexander-Arnold struck a brilliant strike over the wall and into the top corner of Lukasz Fabianski’s net.

Liverpool’s commitment to throwing bodies forward in search of victory came back to bite them in the 67th minute.

After losing to Sadio Mane’s possession, Jarrod Bowen began a mesmerizing run before slipping a pass to Fornals, whose low shot from the edge of the field slipped to save Alison’s weak effort.

Alison’s nightmare was not over. Zuma pushed the keeper out of position as West Ham led West Ham’s third goal from Bowen’s 74th minute corner.

Origi gave Liverpool hope in the 83rd minute.

But Mane widened the away post to avoid a tense West Ham finale.
