Fans attending Premier League games will face random checks of their COVID-19 status at some stadiums in the early weeks of the new season.

The English Premier League said in a statement that ticket holders should be prepared to provide proof of full vaccination or a negative lateral flow test result via an NHS COVID pass 48 hours before the game.

It said it was “working to introduce checks in a phased manner with the least amount of disruption and maximum security possible”.

Supporters must also adhere to a new code of conduct, the league said, which includes wearing masks indoors, avoiding close contact with people they do not know and adhering to one-sided signage around stadiums.

“Even as the nation is reopening, the government has made it clear that this pandemic is still not over. It is possible that security measures for matches may be subject to change at short notice,” the statement said.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson lifted COVID-19 restrictions in England on 19 July. Britain’s COVID-19 cases rose 5% over the past week, with 25,161 new cases of COVID-19 reported in the country on Monday.

The 2021-22 season begins on Friday with newly promoted Brentford hosting Arsenal.
