A brilliant Grant Hanley header got new Norwich boss Dean Smith’s reign off to a perfect start as his side climbed from the bottom of the table to beat Southampton 2-1 in their Premier League clash on Saturday.

Chee Adams scored after Smith, who was sacked by Aston Villa after a 1-0 loss to Southampton on 5 November, took on Norwich last Monday – and when Adams opened the door to his new charges after just four minutes. He had the worst fear when he scored against.

Three minutes later Teemu Pukki led home from a tight angle to pull Norwich level, but it was the home team’s only attempt at goal in the first half to prove to be the only attempt that saw them under tremendous pressure.

Southampton created opportunity after opportunity, with Adams coming closest to securing the lead for the visitors as the Canaries broke into disarray.

Smith sent Joshua Sargent for Todd Cantwell after halftime and the switch had an immediate effect as Norwich were better able to catch the ball and get it into promising crossing positions.

Their reward came in the 79th minute when Hanley topped to lead the winner, and although Theo Walcott had a great chance with a late header, Norwich were able to end a run of three straight Premier League defeats.

The win moved the Canaries to 19th place on eight points, two points above Newcastle United, while Southampton are 13th on 14 points.
