Coimbatore: A city hospital performed surgery on a child weighing just 910 grams. duct arteriole
This is a condition where there is a constant connection between the two blood vessels leaving the heart, which causes too much blood to flow to the lungs. The surgery was performed to avoid shifting to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which could lead to complications.
born to a couple Andhra Pradesh At the 25th week of pregnancy at PSG hospitals in the city, the baby’s organs were preterm.
“The ductus arteriosus is a common umbilical artery that supplies oxygenated blood to the fetus. It usually closes within a few days of delivery,” says Dr. Vinoth Doraisamy, Senior Consultant Pediatrician in the hospital. “However, babies born prematurely are at risk of incomplete closure of this artery and result in too much blood flow to the lungs.”
The baby, who was in the NICU for a few weeks, developed a lung infection. Even after a course of antibiotic therapy, the child remained on ventilator due to patent ductus arteriosus.
“That’s when we decided to surgically close the connecting artery,” says Dr. C Ananthanarayana, Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon of the hospital. “But it was technically challenging to shift the child to the operation theatre, which was on a different floor. The child’s organ systems were so immature that going to the second floor could result in hypothermia or low body temperature with dire consequences. The child’s lungs were also in such a bad condition that they could not withstand the minimum movement of the tubes during shifting. So, we arranged for an operation theater set-up in the NICU itself.
The hospital sealed the baby part of the ICU cabin, and the surgeon had to operate on the baby on the ICU bed, which could not be turned, making it physically difficult. The hour-long process was uneventful. Dr Ananthanarayanan says, “The child is slowly recovering.
