52-year-old Pratima Bhowmik, popularly known as ‘Pratima Di’, created history on Wednesday, becoming the only politician from Tripura to take oath as a Union minister.
Earlier, Santosh Mohan Deb and Triguna Sen were elected as Members of Parliament from Tripura and inducted into the Union Cabinet. However, he was not from Tripura. Deb hailed from Silchar in Assam, while Sen was from West Bengal.
On Bhowmik’s achievement, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb tweeted: “Very proud moment for #Tripura that @PratimaBhowmik ji, the state’s leading representative of #NariShakti, has joined the Union Council of Ministers led by PM Shri @narendramodi “
Bhowmik is a first time MP, elected from West Tripura constituency in the last general elections. Earlier, she was the general secretary of the Tripura unit of the BJP, but relinquished the post after being elected as a Member of Parliament and currently holds the position of the state unit’s vice-president.
A science graduate from Tripura Women’s College here, Bhowmik has always maintained a low profile despite being an active politician for a long time.
