Poll strategist Prashant Kishor on Thursday resigned as advisor to Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, saying he has decided to take a temporary break from an active role in public life.
“As you are aware, in view of my decision to take a temporary leave from an active role in public life, I am not able to handle the responsibilities as your Principal Adviser. As I am yet to decide on my future assignment Therefore, I request you to kindly relieve me of this responsibility. Kishor was instrumental in uniting the warring chief minister and now Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu as infighting threatened to derail the Grand Old Party’s plans to retain power in the upcoming elections.
Singh had appointed the political strategist as his principal advisor in March this year. He broke the news via a tweet that said: “Happy to share that @PrashantKishor has joined me as my principal advisor. To work together for the betterment of the people of Punjab. Looking forward!”
Kishor was appointed “in the rank and position of Cabinet Minister”, the CMO tweeted, and will serve free of charge. It states that they will be paid Re 1 per month as token honorarium. He will be entitled to allowances including government accommodation, half a dozen staff members, free transport, free air travel, telephone and medical facilities.
Kishor had worked with Amarinder before the 2017 elections. The party had secured a landslide majority with 77 seats in the 117-member assembly.
Prashant Kishor has been meeting with several opposition leaders in the last few months. His several meetings with Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar recently fueled speculations about a possible political reorganization of the opposition parties. However, he has maintained that any opposition alliance should have a share of the Congress.
As the Trinamool Congress secured a comfortable victory in Bengal, Kishor, the man behind the party’s success, announced his retirement from election management.
