Varanasi: After carrying forward the socialist ideology of late Rajnarayan for more than five decades and living in it since the inception of the Samajwadi Party (SP), the former minister and MLC Shatrudra PrakashThe one who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on 31 December claimed that “the word socialism has now become the property of one family and stuck in one caste”.
On why he changed his mind at the age of 73 after following socialism from 1967, Prakash said, “The introduction of anti-Congress politics in the country led to the creation of two political streams – Socialism and Jana Sangh. However, with time, The socialist stream took the form of monarchy and the post from party president to chief minister went in one hand. Dynastic system was followed in the ruling family while deciding the successor of the leader.”
Recalling the times of Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, Prakash said, “On the other hand, Jan Sangh progressed with a democratic mindset. Till Mulayam Singh ji was not dominant in the party, he cared about the self-respect of fellow leaders. But, after the end of his era, the likes and dislikes of the new leadership changed and power grab became the sole objective of politics. Reacting to the inclusion of a large group of OBC leaders like Swami Prasad Maurya, he said, “The reason for Varanasi’s ignorance under the rule of SP and BSP was also casteist, as the front class dominates here instead of OBCs and Dalits. ” SP as a move that will ensure large-scale division of OBC votes as other rival parties will also field candidates of the same category and the contest on such seats will become OBC vs OBC.
Prakash, who began his political career as a student leader at Banaras Hindu University and was part of the MSY cabinet in 1989, said, “If the democratic setup of the BJP inspired me, the government’s focus would be on Varanasi and the eastern UP region. on development. Inspired me to join BJP.”
