Parts of Chennai will face power cuts on Thursday as the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) announced maintenance work in some areas of the city.

Electricity will remain suspended in Chennai’s Anna Nagar, Mylapore, Ambattur, Porur, Guindy, Perungudi and KK Nagar from 9 am to 2 pm on Thursday.

Power supply will remain suspended in some areas of Coimbatore city of Tamil Nadu from 9 am to 4 pm on Friday (June 10) due to maintenance work at Race Course substation.

Power supply will remain closed in Thomas Park, Kamarajar Road, Race Course, Avinashi Road (from Anna Statue to Collectorate), Trichy Road (Kannan Departmental Store to Ramanathapuram Signal), Puliyakulam Road (Sungam to Vinayagar Temple), Ramanathapuram 80 feet. Road, Sripati Nagar, Sushila Nagar, Rukmani Nagar, Bharathi Nagar 1 to 6, Pappammal Layout, Park Town, Karunanidhi Nagar and Angan Street.

Talking about the north direction, power cuts have been announced in Jalandhar in Punjab and Gurugram in Haryana due to maintenance work.

Power supply will remain suspended in some areas of Coimbatore city on Friday between 9 am and 4 pm due to maintenance work at the Race Course substation.

GURUGRAM

Sector 47 in Haryana’s Gurugram will face a scheduled power cut lasting up to four hours for the next three-four days. Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) has cut short 10 am to 2 pm to complete the shifting of 11 kV power supply line.

DHBVN officials said the RWAs have been informed about the scheduled power cuts for the next 3-4 days.

The 11 kV line will be transferred underground under the Smart Grid project. The work will take a few days to complete and even after completion it will take a few days to streamline the supplies,” TOI quoted an official as saying.
DHBVN SDO (Sohna Road) Dharam Singh said, “There will be minimal or no disruption in the supply of the distribution network after the shifting of the 11KV line.”

The 11 kV line, about 15 km long, is to be shifted underground and it will take 3-4 days to finish the work, Singh said, adding that he has informed the RWAs and requested residents for cooperation.

Jalandhar

Power supply will be disrupted for five and a half hours in nine areas of Punjab’s Jalandhar on Thursday due to maintenance work.

Power cuts have been announced for these areas: Focal Point Area, Globe Colony, Saini Colony, Raja Garden, Ram Vihar, Udyog Nagar, Guru Amardas Nagar.

Jalandhar Powercom has announced a bandh in these areas for the work of repairing the feeder.

Heatwave-coal shortage double whammy

Amidst rising temperatures and heat wave conditions in states and union territories, India The country is facing its worst power cut in the last six years due to shortage of coal and the fuel used in power generation.

Various parts of the country have faced power cuts this season due to scorching heat and acute shortage of coal in power plants. Electricity demand touched an all-time high in March, as a large part of the country recorded the highest temperature on record during the month. In the national capital, a 72-year record was broken this April, with the temperature reaching 42.6 degrees Celsius on April 11.

Talking about coal production on Wednesday, Union Energy Minister RK Singh said that production of dry fuel will be increased as its demand has increased. Electricity demand on daily basis is 40,000-45,000 MW more than the corresponding day of last year. Energy consumption has increased from 3,500 million units to 4,500 million units.

“Our stock of coal in power plants has come down to 19 million tonnes from 24 million tonnes on April 30. It has come down to 18.5 million tonnes on May 31, but now the imports have started coming in,” the power minister said.
