Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus Ponniyin Selvan 2 is performing exceptionally well at the box office worldwide. The film has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark worldwide in just two days. Apart from the domestic box office, the film is doing wonders at the international ticket counter as well. The sequel earned Rs 38 crore on the first day. The first part of the film, which released in September last year, registered similar numbers.

According to a report in Sacnilk, the film has so far earned Rs 34.35 crore in Tamil Nadu. It has earned Rs 7.80 crore in Karnataka and Rs 5.85 crore in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as well as Rs 5.10 crore in Kerala while the collection from rest of the states stood at Rs 6.40 crore. The overseas earning is estimated to be around Rs 51 crore.

The film recorded an occupancy of 63.25 per cent in Tamil and around 20 per cent in Hindi at the theaters on Sunday, indicating its impressive total collection. While the film is getting commercial success, the film has also received a lot of love from the audience and critics.

Awarding 3.5 stars, News18 said, “The two-part series could have been explored as a grand web series of sorts, something similar to Game of Thrones, or even a three-part film series.” As such, the characters should be fully fleshed out and people should be allowed to make their own choices. Overall, when Ponniyin Selvan was announced, it appeared to be a great door opener for those who were not aware of the five-part novel. However, the two-part series ends up being a great cinematic experience that fell short when it came to storytelling.
