Ponnin Selvan 1 directed by Mani Ratnam to release on 30 September
The epic film ‘Ponniyin Selvan 1’ or PS1 made on a budget of Rs 500 crore by renowned director Mani Ratnam will release on 30 September. The film is based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1955 novel Ponniyin Selvan. According to Mani Ratnam, it is his masterpiece and he is able to operate it only after several unsuccessful attempts.
Ever since the novel became a hit in Tamil Nadu, several filmmakers have attempted to work on it, but they could not convert their search into a film. The novel is based on the 10th century Chola period and the feuds within the ruling dynasty. The role played by the empire’s spies, its military leaders, and the politics behind it is shown in the film.

Legendary Tamil actor MG Ramachandran (MGR), who later became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, and was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, tried his hand at creating Ponniyin Selvan after the novel became a hit. His efforts also did not yield any result due to various reasons.
Mani Ratnam himself tried to make this film in 1999 and 2009, but without success. He later worked with Lyca Productions to finance the film and thus began the shooting of the film. His own Madras Talkies and Aliraja Subhaskaran also joined the production of the film.
The screenplay of the film is written by Mani Ratnam along with Elango Kumarvel and dialogues are penned by B Jayamohan.

It has an impressive cast with Vikram playing the lead role. Tamil stars Karthi, Jayam Ravi are also playing stellar roles. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan He is also playing an important role in the film. The film, which also stars Trisha, Shobita Dhulipala, Aishwarya Lakshmi, Jayaram and Vikram Prabhu in pivotal roles, is shaded by Ravi Varman and edited by Sreekar Prasad.
The music of the film is given by AR Rahman. The film has been shot at a few locations across India and Thailand.
The shooting of the film started in December 2020 and ended in September 2021. With the covid pandemic, the film’s release got delayed, but now the filmmaker has announced that it will release worldwide on 30 September.
