But we are also trying to increase the purchase price of sugarcane. Let’s talk to all the stakeholders first…” the CM told a group of farmers in an interaction at his residence. “Our farmers should not worry or be misled by anyone. The State Advisory Price (SAP) of sugarcane has not been increased in UP for the last three years and was last hiked by Rs 10 per quintal in 2017 soon after the Yogi government came to power. SAP has remained at Rs 315 per quintal since then.

Farmers of western UP have been demanding hike in SAP citing higher cost of production and increase in diesel and fertilizer prices. This is also a major election issue in the state amid protests by farmers at the Delhi-UP border over the three agriculture laws. Recently, Punjab increased the SAP of sugarcane following protests from farmers.

The CM said, ‘Our government has decided that sugarcane mills will start from October 20 in western UP, from October 25 in central UP and in the first week of November in eastern UP.

He also promised the farmers that the sugar mills would continue to operate till the sugarcane would not stand in the farmers’ fields. “When we came to power in 2017, there were cane arrears before 2010. During our tenure, we worked to clear the dues for eight years, ie 96 months. From 2007-2017, sugarcane arrears of Rs 95,000 crore were paid by the previous governments. We have cleared dues of Rs 1.42 lakh crore in our tenure of less than five years,” Adityanath said.

The CM also said that the SP government had procured 6 lakh metric tonnes of wheat in 2016-17, while his government had procured 56 lakh metric tonnes of wheat this year, despite the coronavirus pandemic. He said that the maximum 16 lakh metric tonnes of paddy was procured by the SP government in a year, whereas his government has procured 66 lakh metric tonnes in a year.

The CM claimed, “We have made the purchase at MSP and the amount went directly into the account of the farmers, while the SP (government) made the purchase through middlemen.”
