In 2015, a new government was formed in Jammu and Kashmir under the leadership of PDP founder Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The party for the first time in the state had an alliance with the BJP. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also attended Saeed’s swearing-in ceremony.

Jammu and Kashmir has been in the shadow of controversies since the independence of the country. This dispute, which became the reason for the first war between India and Pakistan, went on the path of terrorism after a while, instead of being political. Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad was the Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 1953 to 1964. GM Sadiq was made the first Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after the end of the post of Prime Minister in March 1965.

During the public meeting of 13 November 1988, VP Singh started a new political party named Jan Morcha (People’s Front) along with Mufti Mohammad Sayeed (left) and other local leaders. Sayeed had joined the Jan Morcha led by Vishwanath Pratap Singh in 1987. VP Singh also made him the Home Minister in his government. In 1989, he resigned from the post of minister.

In 2004, Atal Bihari Vajpayee met Hurriyat leaders in Delhi. This was the first meeting between an Indian prime minister and separatist leaders.

Vajpayee had tried to resolve the Kashmir issue by offering unconditional talks with the Hurriyat. Vajpayee had earlier met separatist leader Shabir Shah in the Parliament House in March 1995. Then Vajpayee had told the need to solve the problem of Kashmir.

The BJP and Mehbooba Mufti’s party had good relations initially in the coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir, but the alliance broke in 2018.

Mehbooba Mufti became the first woman Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir on 4 April 2016, two and a half months after the death of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed on 7 January 2016. Initially, he had good relations with the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but in 2018 the alliance with the BJP broke. After the breakup of the alliance, Mehbooba had said that we knew that this step would be suicidal. Despite that, we put everything at stake.
