Politics was very much liked by the property of MLAs who are contesting again in Punjab. There are 78 leaders out of 101 whose assets have increased by 2 to 3000%. The topmost among them are Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal, Finance Minister Manpreet Badal and AAP MLA Aman Arora. However, there are 21 leaders whose assets have reduced by 74%. The Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Punjab Election Watch have prepared this detail from the affidavits of 101 leaders who are contesting the elections.

It also revealed that in 2017 the average assets of these 101 MLAs was 13.34 crores. Which increased to 16.10 crores in 2022. The assets of these MLAs increased by 2.76 crores i.e. 21% in 5 years.

Top 5 MLA, whose wealth increased the most

  • Sukhbir Badal: His assets increased by 100 crores to 202 crores in 2022 as against 102 crores in 2017.
  • Manpreet Badal: He was the Finance Minister of Punjab. His wealth increased from 40 crores in 2017 to 72 crores in 2022. His wealth increased by 32 crores.
  • Aman Arora: Aam Aadmi Party MLA’s assets increased by 29 crores. The assets increased to 95 crores in 2022 as against 65 crores in 2017.
  • Capt Amarinder Singh: The assets of Captain, who was Chief Minister for four and a half years, increased by 20 crores. His assets were 48 crores in 2017, which increased to 68 crores in 2022.
  • Angad Singh: Was a Congress MLA for 5 years. His wealth increased by 13 crores. In 2017, his assets were 17 crores, which increased to 30 crores in 2022. However, this time Congress did not give him a ticket, so he is fighting as an independent.

Congress was in power for the last 5 years, but the increase in assets was done by the re-contesting leaders of other parties.

  • 14 leaders of Akali Dal are contesting for re-election and their average increase in assets was 8 crores.
  • The average increase in assets of 10 AAP leaders contesting for re-election was 3 crores.
  • 67 Congress leaders are contesting for re-election and the average increase in their assets is 1 crore.
  • Two leaders of Lok Insaaf Party are contesting for re-election and the average increase in their assets is 57 lakhs.
  • Captain re-contesting from Punjab Lok Congress, his assets increased by 20 crores.
  • Two independents contesting for re-election, their assets increased by an average of 6 crores.

(The BJP is the only party in which the assets of its five re-contesting leaders have come down by an average of 14.28 lakhs.)
