Politics at the fore in Telugu film industry’s MAA polls this year

The upcoming elections of the Movie Artists Association, the apex body of the Telugu cinema industry, will see a straight fight between actors Prakash Raj and Vishnu Manchu for the President’s post. Voting will be held on October 10 for 26 posts including vice-president, secretary and treasurer. Over the years, the MAA elections have garnered coverage like the assembly elections due to rising politics, discontent, friction and differences among the panel members.

Prakash Raj has alleged that Manchu and his family are trying unethically to steer the elections in their favour. Manchu is considered close to the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government in Andhra Pradesh. According to a Times of India report, the 39-year-old actor later hit back at Raj and warned him against dragging his family into petty politics.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Information and Public Relations Minister Perni Venkataramaiah clarified that the YSRCP government has nothing to do with the MAA elections. Venkatramaiah, also known as Nani, steered the state government and the ruling party away from the MAA elections.

Prakash Raj thanked the Chief Minister and Nani for the clarification. He shared the video of Nani on Twitter with the caption, “Thank you Hon’ble Chief Minister YS Jagan Garu and Hon’ble Minister Perni Nanu Garu.. Very grateful.”

According to News Minute, Prakash Raj was earlier accused of getting support from the Andhra Pradesh government for the MAA elections. The actor had criticized his rival group for the allegations and those who dragged the names of politicians in the elections.

Even as the Andhra government distanced itself from the MAA polls, the issue of ticket price may still play out during the voting. Actor-politician Pawan Kalyan has repeatedly attacked the state government over his plan to launch an online state-run portal to book movie tickets.
