Polio Vaccine: SII will supply inactivated polio vaccine to the Center for Universal Immunization Program from September. India News – Times of India

New Delhi: Serum Institute of India (SII) will start the idle supply polio vaccine (IPV) has become the first indigenous company for the central government to do so for a universal immunization program from this month, official sources said on Tuesday.
Organization Ministry of Health has recently placed a purchase order for 54 lakh doses of SII with IPV Vaccine. Until now, the government relied on Sanofi, a foreign pharmaceutical company, to supply IPV for the universal immunization programme.
“I would like to inform you that our firm, Serum Institute of India has become the first Indian manufacturer to supply Inactivated Poliomyelitis Vaccine (IPV) to MoHFW, which will protect the children of our country from poliomyelitis disease,” said Prakash Kumar Singh, The Director, Regulatory Affairs in Government and SII informed the Health Ministry recently.
SII’s IPV is World Health Organization pre-qualified for supply to various countries around the world. The Union Health Ministry has also ordered the supply of 36 lakh doses of IPV to Sanofi.
“It is a matter of pride for all of us that in addition to many other life saving vaccines as well as COVID-19 vaccines, our country is now also ‘Atmanirbhar’ (self-reliant) for Inactivated Poliomyelitis Vaccine (IPV) and we are our prime The minister is following the lines of the call of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’,” Singh said in his letter.
The first consignment of IPV will be supplied to GMSD (Government Medical Store Depot) shortly for the vaccination program as per the requirement of the Ministry of Health.
“The supply of IPV from the first Indian company i.e. Serum Institute of India is possible due to your guidance, support of Team MoHFW, visionary vision of our CEO, Dr Adar C Poonawalla as well as tireless efforts of Team SIIPL during the COVID-19 pandemic Has gone,” Singh said in the communication.
India was officially declared polio-free in 2014, but the country’s vaccination program continues.
IPV has been introduced into the Universal Immunization Program as part of the Global Polio end-game strategy, to reduce the risk associated with the bivalent oral polio vaccine switch from the trivalent oral polio vaccine.
IPV was initially introduced in six states in November 2015, which was expanded to the entire country by April 2016.
