Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee on Friday launched his much-loved football club – Diamond Harbour – named after his constituency on the occasion of Poila Boishakh, the Bengali New Year.
The club’s logo and T-shirt were launched by Banerjee as she gave her slogan.
TMC leaders Derek O’Brien and Prasoon Banerjee were present at the launch. Former footballers Manash Bhattacharya and Krishnandu Roy are part of the club and Prasoon Banerjee and other former footballers were also present.
Abhishek Banerjee said, “Everyone has the right to do their politics, but this club is for everyone. You can join the club, whatever party you believe in. A large number of district players want to play and This club is for them.”
The club has applied for affiliation with the Indian Football Association. The members said that the club has plans to play the Calcutta Football League and all necessary arrangements have been made.
Prasun Banerjee told News18, “We are crazy about football. Banerjee plans to promote local talent, which is important.
East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan clubs are big players, but the sports world feels that starting this club is a good step.
Banerjee has been organizing the MP Cup in her constituency for the last four years. Various local clubs from Diamond Harbor assembly constituencies are participating in these tournaments.
Banerjee is a sports lover and used to play cricket. This is also the first time an MP has branded his constituency with his passion for football. In such a situation, all eyes will be on this new club.
