PM Modi to launch torch relay for Chess Olympiad in New Delhi on June 19

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Will inaugurate the torch relay for the first time for the 44th Chess Olympiad to be held here in New Delhi on June 19 in July-August.

Relays, along the lines of the one for the Olympic Games, will be a regular feature of future Chess Olympiads, the World Chess Federation (FIDE) had previously announced.

“Whoever assumed it couldn’t get any bigger was clearly wrong! The first ever torch relay for #ChessOlympiad was held by none other than the Honorable Prime Minister of #India Shri #NarendraModi ji at IG Stadium on June 19, 2022 , will be launched in #New Delhi,” tweeted AICF President Sanjay Kapoor.

Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand is among those to be part of the relay.

FIDE had said that the Olympiad torch relay would always start from India – the land from where the sport originated and would travel across all continents before reaching the host city.

AICF had said that due to time constraints, this year the Chess Olympiad torch relay will run only in India.

The 44th Chess Olympiad is scheduled to be held from July 28 to August 10 at Mahabalipuram near here.

A record 343 teams in the Open and Women’s categories from 187 countries have already entered for the tournament.
