Legend has it that Sant Tukaram was made by the scholar Rameshwar Bhat to immerse his books of verses in the Indrayani River. Sant Tukaram argues that the verses explaining the essence of the Vedas in Prakrit were not his writings, but rather the words of the Lord speaking through him found no favor with Bhat. According to legend, Bhat asked Saint Tukaram to dip the books of verses into the river and declared that if it was indeed the Lord’s doing, he would return them spotless.

Saint Tukaram meditated for 13 days sitting on a slab of stone on the bank of the river, after which unaffected by the water, books were found floating in the river. Devotees of Tukaram offer prayers at the Shila temple before starting their pilgrimage to Pandharpur in the Hindu months of Varkari, Ashadha and Kartik.

In November last year, Modi had laid the foundation stone for the four-laning of major sections of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Palki Marg (NH-965) and Sant Tukaram Maharaj Palki Marg (NH-965G). Dedicated walkways are being constructed along the highways to ease the movement of the Warkaris making the pilgrimage to Pandharpur.
