He was addressing a gathering of MGNREGA volunteers at Nanmeni, a tribal-dominated gram panchayat in his parliamentary constituency here.

Gandhi said, “I was watching during COVID when thousands and thousands of people were left without jobs and MGNREGA saved them. Of course, the PM didn’t comment about MGNREGA then. And he is about MGNREGA now. I don’t comment.”

Because, it had become clear that what he called a monument to the failure of the UPA was actually protecting India during the pandemic, he said.

He recalled the massive resistance by bureaucrats and others against MGNREGA when the UPA government had brought out the scheme claiming that it would result in huge loss of money.

But, the idea was to build the country with dignity, use its people to build the country’s infrastructure and ensure dignity of labour, Gandhi said.

“It was made to protect our people and it was by no means a tool for charity,” he said, adding that he was surprised to see Modi speaking against MGNREGA in Parliament and called it the UPA government. A living monument of failures. ,

Stating that the rural employment guarantee scheme is only part of the solution, he said that the country’s economy and job creation are the engines of the program and if they are not functioning properly then MGNREGA will become useless.

“It requires harmony in the society. These are some of the challenges that the country is facing. We should work unitedly to solve it,” he said.

Calling MGNREGA workers as “builders of the nation”, he also criticized the media for not giving enough space or priority to their work.

Gandhi said the media talks about cricket and Hollywood but it is not giving enough priority to the exemplary work shown by ordinary employees.

He also urged the Center to consider the requests of people regarding extension of MGNREGA work to 200 days, increasing their daily wages by Rs 400 and expanding the scheme to areas like paddy cultivation.
