Elections are due in Meghalaya in February or March. TMC’s parliamentary party leader in the state is former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, who switched to TMC from Congress in November last year.

A post by TMC leader Kirti Azad on Khasi dress Zimphong has created a ruckus. With PM Modi alleging disrespect to the culture, the chief ministers of three northeastern states have condemned the move by the former cricketer. However, Kirti Azad has deleted that post after seeing her gritty.

Keerti tagged all the CMs in her clarification and wrote – I have not insulted the attire. I love it, I just wanted to say that our Prime Minister loves to make fashion statements. They leave no chance for it.

First see Kirti’s post, which she has deleted…

PM Modi wore the traditional Khasi dress ‘Jimphong’ during a public meeting in Shillong on 18 December. Former cricketer and TMC leader Kirti Azad posted a picture of Modi in the same dress along with a photo of a female model wearing a similar outfit and wrote – Na nar hai na nahi hai ye naari, kewal hai ye fashion ka pujari.

Reply to Pema Khandu and Himanta Biswa Sarma
Kirti Azad first deleted the post. He then replied to the tweets of Arunachal CM Pema Khandu and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma. Both of them had written that Kirti had insulted the culture of Meghalaya. Which will not be tolerated. If TMC agrees with Kirti’s words, then the public will not forgive it.

TMC also shrugged off
On the other hand, Kirti’s party TMC also distanced itself from the controversy arising out of her post. TMC posted on the official Twitter handle – We uphold the diversity of India and respect the vibrant culture of our country. We celebrate ethnic traditions and strive to empower them. We do not support Kirti Azad’s comment and strongly condemn it. The party has nothing to do with his remarks.

Kirti Azad keeps changing parties
Cricketer Kirti Azad, who was part of the 1983 World Cup winning Indian team, is known for switching parties. Kirti was elected MP from Darbhanga for the third time in 2014, but was suspended by the BJP on 23 July 2015.

In February 2019, Azad left the BJP and joined the Congress, but remained angry with his constant neglect. In 2021 itself, he left Congress and took membership of TMC.
