Neeraj Kumar writes about “many untoward things happening even at the grassroots level” during team selection

Former IPS officer Neeraj Kumar, who served as the head of BCCI’s anti-corruption unit between 2015 and 2018, has made some serious allegations in his book titled ‘A Cop in Cricket’. Neeraj claims that fixing is just the tip of a ‘huge iceberg’ of corruption in cricket.

“The three years that I spent in the BCCI, I realized that fixing was just the proverbial tip of the vast iceberg of corruption in cricket. Fixing is, in fact, a small percentage of the large-scale fraud in which cricket administrators are involved,” Niraj writes in his book.

Pointing to Jammu and Kashmir, he alleges misappropriation of revenue by state cricket associations Cricket Union matter.

“Beautiful revenue earned by cricket India – Thanks to IPL – parceled out to state cricket associations, where money is mostly misappropriated. Neeraj claims that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) case against top officials of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) for embezzlement of crores of rupees given to them by the BCCI in 2015 is a case in point.

He then goes on to write about the many “nasty things that happen on the ground” during team selection.

“These incidents are a matter between the selector and the aspiring cricketer or their family.”

Neeraj said that during his tenure, the ACU looked into several complaints in which some young cricketers were sought for sexual favors.

Kumar Neeraj writes, “Players and their parents often complained to us that they were duped of lakhs of rupees by coaches or officials who promised them a place in the IPL or Ranji team and then disappeared.”
