Rakesh was once again the star for Gujarat Giants as they defeated Telugu Titans 40-22 in Match 48 of Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season 8 at the Sheraton Grand in Whitefield here on Tuesday. Rakesh scored a Super 10 (16 points) for the Giants, while Parvesh Bhainswal scored four tackle points.

The lack of a leader in Telugu Titans’ defense was the major difference between the teams, with raider Rajneesh putting up his best performance with 12 points. The team is without a win in season 8 and is at the bottom of the points table.

Gujarat started without their experienced corner duo Ravinder Pahal and Girish Ernak in the line-up. Titans, already missing experienced raiders Rohit Kumar and Siddharth Desai, did not have the start to replace the young Mohammad Shihas with Sandeep Kandola.

Not surprisingly, the first half belonged to the raiders with so many changes in defence. Gujarat’s Rakesh opened his all-out effort in the 8th minute by scoring his first Super Raid (3 points) of the match. The Giants eventually got past it to take a seven-point lead with a gap of eight minutes.

Titans’ Rajneesh collected valuable raid points, but his team failed to support him in defense. Rakesh of Gujarat has had exceptional performances in Season 8, and he did another three-point Super Raid. Rakesh picked up his Super 10 as Gujarat finished the first half on top with a score of 20-13. The Titans had only one successful tackle in the entire half.

Rakesh and Mahendra Rajput kept getting raid points as the game was played at a slow pace after the resumption. Rajneesh got his Super 10 as Titans realized a possible comeback but Ratan K got a super tackle and a raid point to restore parity on the mat. Gujarat closed all doors for Titans comeback, Parvesh Bhainswal also got a super tackle with a well dash on Ankit Beniwal.

Gujarat had a lead of 11 points with five minutes to spare and built on that momentum with another all out in the final minutes to register their second win of the season.
