However, not all news that comes on social media is true. Unfortunately, several YouTube channels contribute to spreading misinformation, prompting the government to caution people against such unreliable sources. The Fact Check team at the Press Information Bureau (PIB) delved into this issue and unearthed some unsettling truths about YouTube channels circulating falsehoods.
PIB’s investigation unveiled 9 YouTube channels peddling misinformation and fake news. These channels propagated false information about government schemes, accidents, and disasters. Among the list of channels flagged for spreading misleading content are Aapke Guruji, Sansanilive, BJ News, Bharat Ekta News, gvt news, Ab Bolega Bharat, and Daily Names of Study. Subscribers to these channels are urged to exercise caution.
The Reality Unveiled
PIB’s Fact Check team verified that the information disseminated through these channels is entirely inaccurate. Moreover, they highlighted schemes supposedly launched by the Central Government, which in reality, do not exist. PIB took to social media, including Twitter, to expose the reality behind these channels through multiple posts.
Spread of False Information
What’s alarming is that these 9 YouTube channels collectively boast over 8.3 million subscribers. They propagate misleading and fake content concerning prominent figures like the Prime Minister, Chief Justice, and Chief Election Commissioner. The content spreads false claims about EVM bans, Union Ministers’ resignations, purported bans on certain currency denominations (like Rs 200-500 notes), and even misinformation about the President’s rule. Additionally, misleading information is often showcased in the video thumbnails, further exacerbating the issue.
