In November 2019, at its General Conference, UNESCO declared Pi Day as “International Mathematics Day”.

Pi Day 2023: This year, March 14 is the 144th birth anniversary of Nobel Prize winning physicist Albert Einstein. The day is also celebrated as Pi Day to celebrate the mathematical constant, Pi which is one of the most recognizable mathematical symbols, π.

It is celebrated on this day because the date, when written in month/day (3/14) format, corresponds to the first three digits of the value of a mathematical constant. It was the mathematician Archimedes of Syracuse, born in 287 BC, who first calculated the value of pi.

However, the mathematical constant was popularized later when the Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler used the symbol for pi in 1737. The Pi symbol has been used for two and a half centuries now. It also finds its place in Egyptian mythology.

People in ancient Egypt believed that the Pyramids of Giza were built on the principles of Pi. The vertical height of pyramids is related to the circumference of their base in the same way as the relationship between the radius of a circle and its circumference.

Pi is also a unique mathematical value because it represents the ratio of the circumference of any circle to its diameter. Usually the value of pi is calculated to two decimal points, 3.14. Although it is an irrational number, after the decimal point, the digits keep going up to 70,000 decimal points. In the fraction of Pi, the value is 22/7.

It is also known as Mathematics Day recognized by the United Nations on 14 March.

According to UNESCO, the purpose of International Mathematics Day is to demonstrate the fundamental role played by the mathematical sciences in the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
