Photo of Karnataka Chief Minister Bommai’s son from official meeting raises eyebrows, Congress questions ‘dynastic politics’

In what could be the first major controversy for Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, a photograph of his son Bharat in the Vidhan Sabha annexe and industry leaders has raised wings in political circles.

As reported by The News Minute, on August 8, industry leaders such as Azim Premji, Mohandas Pai and Kiran Mazumdar Shaw had a courtesy call on the new chief minister to discuss Bengaluru’s industrial development and infrastructure.

As the picture of the gathering went viral, the opposition Congress questioned Bharat’s role in the chief minister’s meeting with industry stalwarts.

In a tweet on Saturday, the Congress asked whether Bharat’s presence had anything to do with continuing “dynastic politics” and even called him ‘Dhritarashtra’.

The party also took a dig at former Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, whose son Vijayendra was often referred to as the “Super CM” and attended official meetings. There was talk that BSY had to give up its crown as his son’s interference in the day-to-day politics of the state did not go down well with the party high command. BSY’s second son Raghavendra is the Lok Sabha MP from Shivamogga. Unlike Yediyurappa’s sons, Bharata is not in active politics and identifies himself as an entrepreneur.

The most striking feature of Bommai’s cabinet expansion was the exclusion of Yeddyurappa’s son Vijayendra. It was widely rumored that he would join the cabinet with a stellar portfolio. But the high command seems to have vetoed Bommai, who was keen to give a berth to his guru Yediyurappa’s son for the smooth running of the government.

According to insiders, Yediyurappa was firm that his son would join the cabinet. But, it seems he lost his clout in the party when he was forced to step down a week later.
