Petrol and diesel prices remained stable across the country on Saturday, February 18

The prices of the two primary automotive fuels – petrol and diesel – have remained stagnant in the country for a long time. This is courtesy the price stabilization by the central government in light of the losses incurred by oil marketing companies (OMCs) in the wake of the pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. Last time there was a change in the prices of petrol and diesel India It was on May 21, 2022, when the government slashed excise duty on the two fuels.

With prices continuing to remain stable, petrol and diesel prices remained steady across the country on Saturday, February 18 as well.

The only metropolitan city in India where petrol cost did not exceed Rs 100 was Delhi, where a liter of petrol was selling for Rs 96.72. One liter of petrol was the most expensive in Mumbai among the metropolitan cities of India, where petrol was being sold at Rs 106.31. In Kolkata, the price of the same quantity of fuel was trading at Rs 106.03, down by just Rs 0.28. One liter of petrol sold at Rs 102.73 in Chennai.

Owners of diesel vehicles were better off in terms of fuel prices. Diesel is priced at Rs 89.62 per liter in Delhi and Rs 94.27 per liter in Mumbai. In Kolkata, the fuel cost Rs 92.76 per litre, while the same amount of fuel in Chennai was priced at Rs 94.24 per litre.

The price of petrol and diesel varies by state and region in India, mainly due to the duties imposed by state governments on these fuels, the primary of such additional duties being the Value Added Tax (VAT). Globally, the price of crude oil and its derived fuels fluctuates every day due to changes in exchange rates, supply and demand factors and even policy decisions.
