Petrol and diesel prices in the country remained stable for more than a month on Wednesday, June 29. On May 21, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced reduction of excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 8 and Rs 6 per liter respectively. With this move, the rates of petrol have been reduced by Rs 9.5 per liter and that of diesel by Rs 7 per liter.
Petrol in Delhi is being sold on Wednesday at Rs 96.72 per liter while diesel is being sold at Rs 89.62 per liter. In Mumbai, a liter of petrol costs Rs 111.35, while a liter of diesel is available for Rs 97.28. The retail price of petrol in Kolkata is Rs 106.03 per litre, while the retail price of diesel is Rs 92.76 per litre. Petrol consumers in Chennai will have to pay Rs 102.63 per liter, while diesel consumers in Tamil Nadu capital will have to pay Rs 94.24 per litre.
Fuel prices in the country are set and revised by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) on a daily basis. Prices are based on the benchmark average price of the fuel over the past 15 days in the global market and foreign exchange rates. Apart from OMCs, fuel prices also vary from state to state; This is because petrol and diesel prices depend on several local factors such as freight charges and local taxes (VAT).
