Mumbai’s petrol price is still the highest among the four metro cities, with a liter of the precious fuel costing Rs 107.26, while diesel costs Rs 96.19 a liter in the financial centre. In Kolkata, a similar trend was observed in fuel prices, where a liter of petrol and diesel were sold at Rs 101.62 and Rs 91.71 respectively.

Fuel prices remained unchanged in Chennai too, with petrol prices remaining unchanged and back at Rs 98.96. Diesel also remained the same on Wednesday and was sold at Rs 93.26 per liter in the Tamil Nadu capital.

Fuel prices vary across the country and the difference in prices is due to central excise duty and state-levied local VAT, freight charges, both of which account for almost half of the retail sale price of the fuel. State-owned refiners Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. revise fuel prices daily in line with benchmark international crude oil prices and foreign exchange rates. Any change in fuel prices is implemented every day at 6 AM IST.

Meanwhile, oil prices edged up marginally on Wednesday, after coming under pressure following a broad market movement on Monday and the session seen on Tuesday. Reuters reported overnight gains after a modest 1 per cent rise in early trade, as industry data showed US crude stocks fell more than expected in two storms over the past week, Reuters reported.

After gaining 44 cents on Tuesday, Brent crude futures gained 68 cents, or 0.9 per cent, to settle at $75.04 a barrel by 0131 GMT. October West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures climbed 75 cents, or 1.1 per cent, up 35 cents from Tuesday, bringing the final price to $71.24 a barrel.
