In order to give relief to the consumers battered by the record level fuel pricesThe government had cut excise duty on petrol by Rs. 5 per liter and diesel at Rs. 10 per litre, on 3 November.
According to a price notification issued by state-owned fuel retailers, fuel prices remained stable for the 23rd consecutive day on November 27. Earlier this month, the central government reduced excise duty on petrol and diesel to bring down retail rates from record highs. In the national capital Delhi, a liter of petrol retails at Rs 103.97 per litre, while diesel too remains unchanged at Rs 86.67 per litre.
To give relief to consumers troubled by the record high fuel prices, the central government had reduced the excise duty on petrol by Rs 5 per liter and on diesel by Rs 10 per liter. Petrol rates in the national capital on November 4 stood at Rs 103.97 per liter and diesel by Rs 86.67 per liter on November 4 due to reduction in excise duty. As there has been no increase in fuel prices since then, the retail rates have remained the same.
In Mumbai too, the price of petrol remained unchanged and stood at Rs 109.98 per litre. A liter of diesel is selling at Rs 94.14 per liter in the city. On May 29, Mumbai became the first metro in the country where petrol touched Rs 100 per litre.
Petrol and diesel prices in Kolkata were also stable at Rs 104.67 per liter and Rs 89.79 per liter respectively on November 27. One liter of petrol and diesel is also being sold in Chennai at unchanged prices for the last several weeks. Petrol in the Tamil Nadu capital costs Rs 101.40 per liter, while diesel costs Rs 91.43 per litre.

After reducing the excise duty, the central government had also urged the states to reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel to provide further relief to the consumers.
In order to provide additional relief to the consumers, about 27 states and union territories have cut VAT. The States/UTs which have extended this additional VAT benefit are Jammu & Kashmir, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Sikkim, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Karnataka, Puducherry, Daman & Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Tripura, Gujarat, Nagaland, Punjab, Goa, Meghalaya, Andaman and Nicobar, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Odisha, Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh and Manipur.
