petrol and diesel Prices hit new record highs across the country on Sunday after prices rose again following a hike in international oil prices. Petrol prices across India were hiked by 20-30 paise per liter on Sunday.
This price hike took the price of petrol in the national capital to its all-time high of Rs 102.39 per litre. With this price hike, the price of petrol in Mumbai has gone up to Rs 108.43. Along with petrol prices, diesel also poked a big hole in people’s pockets by hitting a record high of Rs 98.48 per liter in Mumbai and Rs 90.77 in Delhi.
The hike in prices is the fifth hike this week, taking the price of petrol above Rs 100 in most major cities of the country. The price of petrol in Chennai was Rs 100.01. Diesel price in Tamil Nadu capital was also revised to Rs 95.31 per litre. This was the eighth increase in diesel prices in 10 days, which has raised fuel prices above Rs 100 in several cities of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
Petrol price revision pushed its price above Rs 103 per liter in Kolkata. Diesel price also saw a hike here and it went up to Rs 93.87 per liter during the day. The prices of these essential commodities vary from state to state based on various local taxes levied by the local government.
Petrol, diesel prices are also tracking international oil prices which are trading at the highest level in the last three years.
State-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) on September 24 resumed daily price revision after international oil prices hit a three-year high. Global benchmark Brent crude is trading above $78 per barrel.
When international oil rates fell in July and August, retail prices of petrol and diesel were reduced by Rs 0.65 and Rs 1.25 per liter in the Delhi market. Earlier, between May 4 and July 17, the price of petrol was increased by Rs 11.44 per liter. During this, the price of diesel had increased by Rs 9.14.
India is dependent on imports to meet about 85 per cent of its oil needs and therefore benchmarks local fuel rates to international oil prices.
