Petrol, diesel prices fall drastically after tax cut; See how much you pay for a liter

Petrol and diesel prices remained unchanged for the twelfth consecutive day on Monday, 15 November. The central government had announced reduction in excise duty on fuel on the eve of Diwali. it made Petrol, Diesel Prices Rapid decline across the country. After seeing prices at an all-time high and receiving criticism for it, the government had resorted to slashing petrol prices by Rs 5 and diesel by Rs 10. The decision was followed by several positions, mostly governed by the National Democrats. The alliance (NDA) and allies have also cut Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel prices.

Two opposition-ruled states have announced reduction in the prices of petrol and diesel. These are Punjab and Rajasthan. The biggest drop in petrol prices has been seen in Congress-ruled Punjab. According to the price list shared by the state-owned fuel retailers, the combined effect of excise duty and VAT reduction resulted in reduction of petrol price in Punjab by Rs 16.02 per liter and diesel by Rs 19.61 per liter. VAT on petrol price in the state was cut by Rs 11.02 while that on diesel by Rs 6.77. Ladakh witnessed the biggest reduction in diesel prices as the rates came down by Rs 9.52 per litre. This is on account of reduction in VAT by Rs 10 per liter in excise duty.

With the Centre’s tax cut, petrol price in the national capital Delhi rose to Rs 103.97 and remained unchanged on Wednesday. The price of petrol in Mumbai on that day was Rs 109.98 per liter, the highest in the metropolitan city. On Monday, the price of one liter of petrol in Kolkata was Rs 104.67. On Monday, the price of petrol in Chennai was Rs 101.40 a liter.

The cost of a liter of diesel that day was Rs 86.67. The Delhi government has not announced any reduction in VAT. Diesel price in the financial capital was retailing at Rs 94.14 for a liter after the price cut, and was also unchanged. The price of one liter of diesel in Kolkata was fixed at Rs 89.79. In Chennai, diesel was priced at Rs 91.43 per liter, while in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, a liter of diesel would cost Rs 90.87.

The states/UTs that extended additional VAT benefits are Ladakh, Karnataka, Puducherry, Jammu & Kashmir, Sikkim, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh, Daman & Diu, Dadra & Nagr Haveli, Chandigarh, Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Gujarat, Nagaland, Punjab , Goa, Meghalaya, Odisha, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Andaman & Nicobar, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.

Among the states that have not reduced VAT so far, the Congress and its allies have ruled Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Tamil Nadu. AAP-ruled Delhi, TMC-ruled West Bengal, Left-ruled Kerala, TRS-led Telangana and YSR Congress-ruled Andhra Pradesh have also not deducted VAT.
