Petrol, diesel prices fall after Center cuts excise duty; Check petrol prices in your city

Petrol, diesel prices today, 22 December: Petrol price remained stable across the country on Wednesday 22 December, while diesel price remained unchanged in India today. Fuel rates have been stable for almost one and a half months now since the reduction in excise duty on petrol and diesel. The central government had announced early last month that it would cut taxes on petrol and diesel, at a time when their prices were hitting new highs every day. Subsequently, the price of petrol in India was reduced by Rs 5 per liter, while the price of diesel was reduced by Rs 10 per litre.

After deducting Central Excise Duty fuel prices, several states – including three opposition-ruled ones – came together to reduce the value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel. Delhi was the latest state to reduce VAT on petrol and diesel. Two consecutive price cuts on auto fuels further reduced their prices, bringing relief to the common man.

With the Centre’s tax cut and state VAT deducted, the price of petrol in the national capital Delhi stood at Rs 95.41 and remained unchanged today. Petrol price in Mumbai was Rs 109.98 per liter that day, which is the highest in the metropolitan city. The price of one liter of petrol in Kolkata on Saturday was Rs 104.67. On Saturday, the price of petrol in Chennai was Rs 101.40 a liter. The price of petrol in Ahmedabad that day was Rs 95.13. Petrol, on the other hand, was retailing at Rs 109.52 per liter in Pune.

The cost of a liter of diesel in Delhi was Rs 86.67. Diesel price in the financial capital was retailing at Rs 94.14 for a liter after the price cut, and was also unchanged. The price of one liter of diesel in Kolkata was fixed at Rs 89.79. In Chennai, diesel was priced at Rs 91.43 per liter, while in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, a liter of diesel would cost Rs 90.87.

Petrol and diesel prices vary from state to state depending on factors such as international crude oil prices, VAT and freight charges. Oil marketing companies update petrol and diesel prices every day at 6 am.
