The regular process of revising the prices of petrol and diesel is done by public sector OMCs like Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). Fuel price revisions done by OMCs are influenced by factors such as international crude oil prices and foreign exchange rates. Petrol and diesel prices vary from state to state due to state taxes and VAT (Value Added Tax).
Several state governments also reduced local taxes after the central government relaxed excise duty on fuel prices. The Odisha government waived off state-levied taxes on petrol and diesel by Rs 2.23 and Rs 1.36 per liter respectively. The Kerala state government announced a reduction in tax on petrol and diesel prices by Rs 2.41 and Rs 1.36 per liter respectively. The Rajasthan government cut VAT on petrol by Rs 2.48 per liter and on diesel by Rs 1.16 per liter.
