Petrol became costlier by 23 paise to Rs 102.86 in Chennai this week, while diesel rose by Rs 0.22 to Rs 94.46 per litre.

Petrol and diesel prices today: Petrol and diesel prices were stable on Monday, April 17, data showed in major cities including New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Bengaluru as the ten-month streak of stability in fuel prices continued on Tuesday.

However, some cities across the country have seen price fluctuations in the last few days. Petrol became costlier by 23 paise at Rs 102.86 and diesel by Rs 0.22 at Rs 94.46 per liter in Chennai. Petrol price in Gurugram was reduced by 23 paise to Rs 96.66 per liter and in Jaipur by 32 paise to Rs 108.16 per litre, while the price of diesel declined by 22 paise and 29 paise respectively.

Oil marketing companies (OMCs) revise the retail fuel prices every day at 6 am in line with the crude oil price across the world. The Center regulates fuel prices through excise tax, base pricing and price caps.

Petrol and diesel prices vary by state, depending on various parameters like Value Added Tax (VAT), freight charges, local taxes etc. The last nationwide change in fuel rates took place on May 21 last year, when Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman cut excise duty on petrol by Rs 8 per liter and on diesel by Rs 6 per litre.

Since the central government cut excise duty in May 2022, some states have also reduced VAT prices on fuel, while some have imposed cess on petrol and diesel. The Punjab government in the state cabinet meeting decided to impose a cess of 90 paise per liter on petrol and diesel. Kerala Finance Minister KN Balagopal also announced the imposition of cess on petrol, diesel and liquor in the second full budget of the LDF government. A social security cess of Rs 2 per liter will be levied on petrol and diesel. Some cities like Lucknow saw a marginal drop in petrol and diesel prices, check the latest rates here:
