Petrol, diesel cheaper after Center cuts excise duty; Check Fuel Prices Today

Petrol, Diesel Prices on Thursday: Petrol and Diesel Prices Thursday kept unchanged for the eighteenth straight day by the OMCs. Prices have remained stable since Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on May 21 announced a reduction in excise duty by Rs 8 per liter on petrol and Rs 6 per liter on diesel. petrol price in delhi Rs 96.72 per liter today as against Rs 105.41 per liter last month, while diesel will cost Rs 89.62 per liter as against Rs 96.67 last month. In Mumbai, a liter of petrol costs Rs 111.35 while diesel is being sold at Rs 97.28 per litre.

The retail price of a liter of petrol in Kolkata is Rs 106.03 per litre, while the retail price of a liter of diesel in the capital West Bengal is Rs 92.76 per litre. In Chennai, the price of petrol is Rs 102.63 per litre, while the retail price of diesel is Rs 94.24 per liter in the capital city of Tamil Nadu.

Revision of petrol and diesel prices is a routine process carried out by public sector OMCs like Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL). The fuel price revisions made by OMCs are influenced by several factors including international crude oil prices and foreign exchange rates. Within the country, petrol and diesel prices vary from state to state as they are affected by local factors such as local taxes, VAT (value added tax), freight charges, among others.

After the Center relaxed excise duty on fuel prices, the Kerala government also announced a reduction in tax on petrol and diesel prices by Rs 2.41 and Rs 1.36 per liter respectively. The Odisha government offered a rebate of Rs 2.23 and Rs 1.36 per liter in taxes on petrol and diesel, respectively. The Rajasthan government reduced VAT on petrol by Rs 2.48 per liter and on diesel by Rs 1.16 per liter. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra government reduced VAT in petrol by Rs 2.08 per liter and in diesel by Rs 1.44 per liter.

Oil prices edged closer to a 13-week high on Thursday on strong demand in the world’s top consumer, the United States, while demand in China is expected to rebound as COVID-19 restrictions are eased in major cities. Brent crude futures for August were up 12 cents to $123.70 a barrel by 0033 GMT, while US West Texas Intermediate crude for July was up 6 cents at $122.17 a barrel.
