President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has fled the country after resigning due to public uprisings following the economic crisis in Sri Lanka. Other members of the Rajapaksa family, who ruled the country’s power for a long time, are also not visible. The situation is chaotic, yet the Rajapaksa family’s plans are to regain power.

The credit for Gotabaya’s withdrawal cannot be given only to the protesters, Rajapaksa’s family members were also behind it. Notably, Rajapaksa’s nephew and former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s son Namal also wanted to remove him. Mahinda has held the post of President of the country from 2005 to 2015.

Namal is thinking that if the family has to remain in power in the country for a long time, then Gotabaya will have to go. It was the Rajapaksa family that left no stone unturned to prove Gotabaya as a helpless leader. His nephew Namal, 36, sees himself as the family’s political heir. He had said in an interview that there is a need to develop an airport to attract tourists to Sri Lanka.

Namal said that he does not believe in dynasty politics. His father started his political journey from small town 55 years ago, it is only 5 years for him. He said that he would follow the policies of his father instead of his uncle. However, the script to take Sri Lanka into recession was written only when Gotabaya was the Defense Minister in the Mahinda government.

Together they took out billions of dollars in debt during that time. In 2019, Gotabaya became the President and Mahinda became the Prime Minister. But, soon there was a shortage of food and fuel in the country. This forced Mahinda to resign from the post of PM. After this the relationship between the two brothers soured and the public became furious day by day. At one time 6 people from the Rajapaksa family were members of the cabinet. But after the mass revolt, Gotabaya was left alone. In the end he had to resign.
