‘People will not have to wait till 2024’: Haryana Deputy CM’s grandfather Om Prakash Chautala warns Center

Faced with the heat of protesting farmers in Haryana and Punjab, the Center has received a warning from INLD supremo Om Prakash Chautala – Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala’s grandfather – that mid-term general elections in India could happen “anytime”.

Omprakash Chautala, who has been in jail since 2013 for illegal recruitment of junior basic teachers, was released two weeks ago. The four-time Chief Minister was on emergency parole since March 26, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, senior Chautala said that his prediction of early elections was based on the premise that every citizen is suffering from the “wrong policies” of the BJP. In January 2021, Abhay Singh Chautala, the second son of the former Haryana CM, resigned. As an MLA opposed to agricultural laws. At present, INLD does not have any seat in Parliament or Haryana Legislative Assembly.

This is not the first time that Om Prakash Chautala has criticized the policies of the Centre. On December 28, 2020 INLD supremo wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi opposing the implementation of Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Act. , 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

This came even as his grandson’s party, the JJP, backed the law with some amendments. Chautala then claimed that the farmers’ agitation was going on for a long time due to the insistence of the Centre.

Pointing out that many farmers lost their lives during the agitation, the former Haryana CM called upon the Center to repeal agricultural laws or keep them in abeyance till the consent of all unions and experts.

At present, the talks between the central government and the farmers’ unions have reached an impasse. The split between the two sides escalated on 26 January after the farmers’ tractor rally turned violent, resulting in injuries to several Delhi Police personnel and extensive damage to public property.

While the Supreme Court has stayed the implementation of agricultural laws, a committee appointed by the apex court submitted its report related to the law in a sealed cover on March 19.

Delhi Police officials will meet a delegation of farmers on Sunday ahead of their planned protest during the monsoon session of Parliament demanding scrapping of controversial agricultural laws and a legal guarantee on MSP. Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of over 40 farmer unions, has planned that around 200 farmers will protest outside Parliament every day during the monsoon session.

Thousands of farmers from across the country are agitating on Delhi borders against the three agriculture laws, claiming it will abolish the minimum support price system, leaving them at the mercy of big corporations. More than 10 rounds of talks with the government, which is introducing laws on major agricultural reforms, have failed to break the deadlock between the two sides.
