In Joshimath, people affected by landslides took out a torchlight procession to protest against the state government demanding compensation for their losses.

Under the leadership of Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti’s convenor Atul Sati, a group of people took out a march from TCP market to Marwari Chowk on Thursday evening carrying torches in their hands and shouting slogans.

Sati said the committee had called off its 107-day-old dharna last month after Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami assured concrete action on the 11-point demands.

“Though 22 days have passed since we got the assurance from the chief minister, no action has been initiated so far. We are left with no option but to resume our agitation.”

The committee’s demands include simplification of the process of compensating the affected people and making public the report of a joint study conducted by various leading scientific institutions on the landslide crisis in Joshimath.

“People are disheartened. Not even 20% of those affected have received compensation. Land erosion is also continuing. Worse is yet to come as the monsoon is approaching,” said Sati.
