The actor made his acting debut in the 1996 Telugu film Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi. But he garnered a huge fan following after appearing in the 2012 action comedy film Gabbar Singh. Gabbar Singh, directed by Harish Shankar and produced by Bandla Ganesh, was an official remake of the 2010 Hindi film Dabangg. Pawan Kalyan and Shruti Haasan were in the lead roles in the film. The music for the film was composed by Devi Sri Prasad and created a sensation among the fans. As per reports, Gabbar Singh ran for more than 50 days in 306 theaters and received immense appreciation from the audience. The film was made on a budget of Rs 30 crore and collected Rs 150 crore worldwide with a distributor share of Rs 60.55 crore. Apart from this, it also did a pre-release business of Rs 35 crore.

Recently in a media interaction, director Shankar said, “It’s been 11 years since Gabbar Singh. It seems that time flies so fast. Gabbar Singh was released on 11 May 2012. Its dialogues and content are still remembered by people and this is possible only for Pawan.

Gabbar Singh revolves around a police officer who sets out on a mission to take down a corrupt politician. The film became one of the highest grossing South Indian films of 2012. Kalyan won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in Telugu at the 59th Filmfare Awards South. Later, a sequel, Sardar Gabbar Singh was also made, starring Pawan Kalyan along with Kajal Aggarwal and Sharad Kelkar and was released in 2016.

According to reports, Pawan Kalyan is again working with director Shankar for his upcoming film Ustad Bhagat Singh. The script of the film is written by Mithun Chaitanya and the film also stars Pooja Hegde, Pankaj Tripathi and Ashutosh Rana in lead roles. It is going to release next year.
