Passenger dies after cab catches fire at Koyambedu flyover in Chennai Chennai News – Times of India

CHENNAI: In a freak incident, a passenger in a cab was burnt alive when the vehicle suddenly caught fire. Koyambedu Flyover on Monday.
Police said the driver managed to get out of the car when the fire broke out, while the passenger got trapped inside. The driver sustained minor injuries and has been admitted to the hospital.
Mangadu’s driver Sunil picked up the passenger from Velapanahwadi for a drop at Choolaimedu. The incident took place when the vehicle was heading towards 100 Feet Road, Koyambedu on the busy flyover. The passenger who saw the fire from behind informed Sunil, who stopped the car and got out. He tried to open the back door but in vain. Soon the fire engulfed the entire vehicle.
Traffic on this route was stalled for more than an hour. Fire and rescue service personnel brought the fire under control within an hour. The rear of the vehicle was completely damaged.
Police said the cab was booked in the name of Arjunan. It is being told that the passenger had paint and thinner. The burnt body was retrieved and sent for post-mortem at Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital. CMBT Police was investigating the cause of the fire.
“We suspect that the presence of thinner and paint has intensified the fire and the situation has gone out of control,” said an investigating officer. Polly quoted the driver as saying he tried to open the door but it jammed. Police have recovered a tiffin box from the car.
