Parties in UP boycott blocks with AIMIM, is Owaisi the new ‘untouchable’ of state politics?

All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has been quite active in Uttar Pradesh lately as his party gears up for the assembly elections next year. The AIMIM had announced that it would contest the UP elections under the umbrella of the Bhagidari Sankalp Morcha (BSM), convened by Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) chief and former minister Om Prakash Rajbhar in the Yogi Adityanath government. However, now the Morcha seems to be struggling to form an alliance with any major political outfit including the Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Congress. The main reason for this is being told the presence of Owaisi in BSM.

Rajbhar had recently said that he wants to defeat the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at any cost and that his priorities for the alliance would be SP, then BSP and then Congress. However, Rajbhar hasn’t received a positive response from any of the three. He also went to meet UP BJP chief Swatantra Dev Singh recently, he did not call it anything other than a courtesy call.

Speaking to News18 on the issue, SBSP spokesperson Piyush Mishra said, “First of all, as our party chief said, we will give priority to an alliance with Samajwadi Party and then BSP and Congress. If these parties do not form an alliance with us for the 2022 elections, it will be quite clear that they are indirectly working towards forming a BJP government in the state under pressure from a central agency like CBI or ED. Presently, AIMIM partnership is with SBSP under Sankalp Morcha. If any issue arises regarding Owaisi’s presence in the Morcha in future, then the party leadership will decide whether to remove him from the Morcha or not.

Owaisi is on a three-day visit to UP and will take part in many programs. However, on several occasions in the recent past, many contradictions have also come to the fore between the top leaders of AIMIM and BSM.

The Congress and the SP have accused the AIMIM of being the “B-team of the BJP”, which would ensure fragmentation of Muslim votes in UP and consolidation of Hindu votes in favor of the saffron party.

Speaking to News18, UP Congress spokesperson Anshu Awasthi said, “Rajbhar ji started off as a leader of Rajbhar Samaj, but he betrayed his own people by forming an alliance with the BJP in 2017. The atrocities on the people of their society continued but they stayed together. BJP government. Today his situation is like an unpredictable weather forecast: he says something in the morning and may say the opposite in the evening. Now he is not talking about the betterment of his society, he is only talking about his personal benefit and is ready to do anything for it. He shook hands with people who have been declared BJP’s B-team. It is a well known fact that people like Owaisi are the B-team of BJP. Whenever he comes to UP, he makes things easy for BJP. How can we accept such people in alliance with Congress? If Rajbhar ji wants to form an alliance, he will have to leave such people and then approach us. It is for him now to decide whether he wants to go with BJP’s B-team or with Congress.”

SP MLA and spokesperson Sunil Singh Sajan also expressed a similar sentiment. He said, “Samajwadi Party is constantly in talks with smaller parties and those who want to come with us can approach our leadership. However, there is no question of talking to people who work for the BJP. Also, Rajbhar ji can do it.” Come and speak for your party and not for others. We are in alliance with political parties, not with any front. So, if Rajbhar ji wants to come with us, he should speak about his party. Alliances are not formed overnight and it is always the decision of the top leadership.”
