Paris FC and Lyon out of French Cup due to fan violence

Paris FC and Lyon were both kicked out of the French Cup on Monday after a felony forced the cancellation of their December 17 match at half-time.

All teams were tied 1–1 in Paris when fans dispersed on the Charlty Stadium pitch following incidents in the stands.

Instead of trying to end the match, the disciplinary commission of the French Football Federation (FFF) decided to expel both teams.

The FFF’s statement said it has “decided that the two clubs are responsible for the incidents that happened during the match,” even though the presidents of both clubs are blaming each other.

The decisions meant Nice, prepared to face the winner of the tie in the next round, went straight to the last 16.

The commission also fined second-division Paris FC 10,000 euros ($11,320) and Lyon, who have already deducted one point in Ligue 1 for misbehaving fans this season, 52,000 euros.

The commission also handed Lyon a suspended ban from the Cup and forbade fans from taking away games in the league for the rest of the season.

Lyon had already announced that they would ban their fan groups from traveling to away matches.

Paris FC will have to play five home matches behind closed doors.

Bombs and flares were thrown back and forth into the stands after the smoke and fighting broke out as fans fled to the pitch and police intervened.

Two people including a supporter and a policeman were injured in this.

Although no arrests were made at the time, three Paris fans were later arrested and two have been charged.

The incident was the latest in a series at French stadiums this season.

It is the second match this season that includes Lyon fans who have had to leave – their home league game with Marseille was called off after OM captain Dimitri Pete was hit on the head with a plastic bottle.
