Public Works Department (PWD) officials, who involved Paramasivam in many of their projects, remember him as a stickler for quality and a virtuoso with respect to traditional restoration.
“He never hesitated to get his hands dirty. Even at his age, he volunteered to do physical labor to ensure perfection. He never took any formal education, but his technical knowledge on restoration techniques is up to par,” said KP SatyamurthySuperintending Engineer, Public Works Department.
Coming from a family involved in the maintenance and restoration of old buildings, Paramasivam took up the job at the age of 13 and worked for seven decades.
In a video clip that went viral after his death, PWD engineers showed young engineers about the traditional methods in which Paramasivam used traditional lime plaster to bind bricks quickly, unlike cement.
“He’s a stickler for quality,” says his son, P. Thanga Pandi Which is also under heritage protection. “I am now 50 years old and quite experienced. But, to this day, I take my father more carefully to find out if our team was somewhere sluggish in our work,” Thanga Pandy said.
Egg whites, curds from cow’s milk- ingredients used for various aspects of restoration in heritage buildings are akin to a healthy diet. Thanga Pandi recalls that his father always told him that restoration of a heritage building is like applying makeup on a dead person and even it should be done to perfection.
