Param Bir Singh not called again, but asked to appear if needed: Mumbai Police

New Delhi: Former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh on Thursday appeared before the Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police, which is probing an extortion case against him.

He said, ‘He has given statements before the crime branch. As per the order of the Supreme Court, he will continue to cooperate in the investigation,” his lawyer was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Regarding interrogation, Mumbai Police said in its statement that Param Bir Singh recorded his statement in the crime branch unit 11 office Kandivali in the extortion case registered by Bimal Agarwal.

He was asked questions in this matter itself. He hasn’t been called again as of now but has been told that he will be called whenever needed”: said Mumbai Police, as reported by ANI.

After appearing before the Crime Branch, former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh said: “As per the order of the Supreme Court, I have joined the investigation today. I am cooperating with the investigation and I have full faith in the court.

News agency PTI quoted officials as saying that the former Mumbai Police Commissioner was questioned for about seven hours on Thursday.

Param Bir Singh was seen leaving Crime Branch Unit-11 in a government vehicle at around 6.15 pm.

The IPS officer, declared a proclaimed offender by a city court, appeared before the crime branch to record a statement in an extortion case registered at the city’s Goregaon police station.

The questioning of the crime branch took place when the former police commissioner arrived in Mumbai on Thursday to join the investigation on the directions of the court, an official said.

I will join the investigation as directed by the court, Param Bir Singh told the media on arrival.

The IPS officer, who is facing several extortion cases in Maharashtra, had told news channels on Wednesday that he was in Chandigarh.

Param Bir Singh has not reported for work since May this year following his transfer from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner and corruption allegations against then Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

The Supreme Court has granted protection from arrest to Parambir Singh.

Mumbai Police officer Sachin Vaze was arrested in connection with the suspicious death of businessman Mansukh Hiran in an SUV carrying explosives and then businessman Mansukh Hiran near ‘Antilia’, home of industrialist Mukesh Ambani.
