One of the most talented and experienced classical singers, Pandit Vijay Kumar Kitchlew passed away on February 17 at a private hospital in Kolkata following a heart attack. He was an exponent of the Agra Gharana and a proud recipient of the Padma Shri award. His greatest inspiration was Ustad Faiyaz Khan of the Agra Gharana, a disciple of Ustad Moinuddin Dagar and Ustad Aminuddin Dagar, known as the Dagar brothers. He also took some lessons from Ustad Latafat Hussain Khan. He learned Dhrupad under the Dagar brothers and Khayal under Ustad Latafat.

The singer moved to Kolkata due to work in a British shipping company, after which he never changed the city. Pandit Kitchlu never took up singing as a full-time profession, but contributed extensively in this field, such as the establishment of the Sangeet Academy in Kolkata and the formation of the Kolkata Sangeet Mandal. He also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee expressed its condolences on Friday night with the statement, “The passing of the legend is an irreparable loss.”

Pandit Kitchlu was 93 years old at the time of his death. His mortal remains were taken to Rabindra Sadan around 12 noon on 18 February, where his fans and followers had the opportunity to pay their last respects before his last rites at 1 pm.

He had a history of multiple comorbidities including pneumonia and ischemic heart disease. Media reports suggest that Pandit Kitchlu had complained of breathlessness a few weeks back. He was then taken to the hospital, where he was admitted after preliminary examination. He was undergoing treatment; But the eminent classical singer breathed his last at around 6.30 pm on Friday evening.

Pandit Kitchlu was an icon of Indian music and will always be remembered by musicians for his great contribution.
