Palestinian killed in clash with IDF in West Bank; son of PIJ leader said arrested

A Palestinian man died during clashes with Israeli troops in the southern West Bank early Monday, Palestinian health officials said, as media reports said the son of a senior militant official was arrested in the city of Jenin. .

Omar Manna, 22, was shot dead and six others wounded during clashes with Israeli troops in the Dheesheh refugee camp, south of Bethlehem, according to the Palestinian Authority health ministry.

The ministry quoted security sources as saying that the Israeli army arrested several people in the area.

Meanwhile, in Jenin, Palestinian media reports said Israeli forces arrested Yahya Saadi, the son of Bassem Saadi, leader of Palestinian Islamic Jihad in the West Bank.

Bassem Saadi’s arrest In August, a round of fighting broke out between Israel and the militant group in the Gaza Strip. He has since been indicted on various terror charges.

On Saturday night, a rocket was launched from Gaza in southern Israel, apparently over the death of two PIJ members killed on Thursday during a military raid in the West Bank.

Over the past year, PIJ has launched rockets into Israel in response to members being killed or arrested in the West Bank.

There was no immediate comment from the Israel Defense Forces or border police on the overnight clashes and arrests.

Tensions have been high in the West Bank over the past year, with the IDF launching a major counter-terrorist operation, mostly focused on the northern West Bank, to deal with a series of Palestinian attacks, including Israeli and West Bank attacks. 31 people have died. since the beginning of the year.

The operation has made more than 2,500 arrests in nearly nightly raids, but has also released more than 150 Palestinians, many of them – but not all – for carrying out attacks or during clashes with security forces.

Israeli politics told straight

I joined The Times of Israel after many years covering US and Israeli politics for Hebrew news outlets.

I believe that responsible coverage of Israeli politicians means offering a 360-degree view of their words and actions – reporting not only what happens, but what it means in the wider context of Israeli society and the region. .

This is hard to do because you can rarely take politicians at face value – you must go the extra mile to present full context and try to overcome your own biases.

I’m proud of my work that tells the story of Israeli politics directly and comprehensively, I believe that Israel is stronger and more democratic when professional journalists do that difficult job well.
