Pakistan’s Maryam Nawaz tests positive for Covid-19

Senior Pakistani politician Maryam Nawaz on Saturday said she had tested positive for coronavirus after back-to-back election rallies ahead of Sunday’s Punjab bypolls.

Maryam, who is the Vice President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), made the announcement in a post on Twitter.

“Covid Positive!” she wrote.

“It is sad to hear that Mary Beti [and] Captain Safdar has come to know of Kovid. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said in a tweet, “My deepest prayers and best wishes for his speedy recovery.

“The way he led the PML-N’s political campaign has made us all proud,” he said.

The PML-N leader has addressed several rallies in recent days as part of the party’s campaign for the upcoming bypolls in Punjab.

This is not the first time that Maryam has got coronavirus. He had earlier tested positive in July last year.

Several top politicians, including President Arif Alvi, ousted Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, have tested positive. These have all been fixed.

Pakistan recorded 737 new Covid-19 cases and 10 deaths in the last 24 hours. According to the Ministry of Health Services, the positivity rate was recorded at 3.3 per cent.
