“In continuation to the earlier directions of the Authority issued from time to time, it was informed that satellite TV channels are prohibited from broadcasting objectionable drama/content based on obscene dressing, caressing, bed scenes, and gestures, sensitive/controversial plots and unnecessary are involved. “Details of incidents which are extremely disturbing, disturbing to the audience and against generally accepted standards of decency,” PEMRA said in a release.

“On the prevailing trends in Pakistani drama industry, PEMRA is receiving many complaints from general public not only on Pakistan Citizen Portal (PCP) and PEMRA Complaint Call Center and Feedback System but also on social media/Whatsapp groups. . A large section of the society believes that the plays are not presenting the true picture of Pakistani society. Hugging / caressing / extramarital affairs, obscene / bold dressing, bed scenes and married couple intimacy are being glamorized in defiance of Islamic teachings and culture of Pakistani society.

The release further added: “With this in mind, all satellite TV licensees shall cease broadcasting of such content in dramas, and shall ensure compliance with the PEMRA laws in letter and spirit.”

Human rights professional Reema Omar, who shared the PEMRA release on her official Twitter handle, said the closeness and affection between the married couple is not a “true depiction” of Pakistani society.
