Pakistan minister defends PM Imran Khan, calls remarks on Osama bin Laden a ‘slip of the tongue’

Pakistan’s Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry came to Imran Khan’s defense when he said the PM’s statement on former Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden, calling him a martyr was nothing but a ‘slip of the tongue’.

Speaking to a New Pakistan channel, Chaudhry further emphasized that Pakistan considers Osama bin Laden a terrorist and Al-Qaeda a terrorist organisation.

This statement comes in the backdrop of a statement made by Prime Minister Imran Khan while addressing the National Assembly. During the address, the prime minister recalled how the Americans had conducted an operation in Abbottabad and “killed Osama bin Laden, martyred him”.

Following the statement, a viral video clip was also circulated in which Imran Khan was seen attacking the United States for how bin Laden was killed in Abbottabad. Khan said, “Martyred”.

While the PM received criticism from people across the world, several of his ministers of state stood by him defending his words. Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi claimed in a recent interview with Tolo News that Khan’s remarks were taken “out of context”.

“He was quoted out of context. And, uh, you know, a particular section of the media played it,” he said, “I’ll let it pass,” when Qureshi was asked if he was interested in that. Disagree that bin Laden was a martyr.

Osama bin Laden was killed in 2011 by US Navy personnel in a military operation in the garrison city of Abbottabad. He was the head of the global terrorist group Al Qaeda and the brains behind the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States in 2001.
