Pakistan beat Australia in test after 15 years

On this day, 11 years ago in 2010, Pakistan mustered their courage to beat the much-anticipated Aussies by three wickets at the end of a tense fourth day at Headingley Leeds. It was also Pakistan’s first Test win over Australia in 15 years and with this victory, the Asian team ended their 13-run losing streak against Oz.

Chasing a target of 180 runs for victory in the fourth innings, Pakistan got off to a great start and scored 137 runs for the loss of three wickets. However, soon after, Pakistan’s batting order collapsed as they lost four wickets for 40 runs. In the end, Mohammad Amir and Umar Gul put Pakistan on the line. Gul scored the winning run for his team off Mitchell Johnson.

With this win, Pakistan leveled the two-match series 1-1. Australia won the first test match of the series by 150 runs. Following that defeat, the then Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi announced his retirement from the red-ball cricketer and Salman Butt was appointed as their new captain.

Butt couldn’t have started better to rein in his captaincy as he ended Australia’s monopoly in their bilateral Test events.

Put in the field first, Pakistan seamers – Mohammad Asif, Amir and Gul – wreaked havoc on the Aussies as they blew them away for 88 runs. It was also Australia’s lowest first innings score in five decades. Asif and Amir took three wickets each, while Gul took two.

In reply, Pakistan scored 258 before being dismissed and took control of the match by taking a massive 170-run lead on the second day.

Australia scored 349 runs for the loss of ten wickets in their second innings. But that was not enough to nab a resurgent Pakistan unit who went on to win the match by three wickets after a few hiccups.
